Cryopreservation is an advanced medical procedure that allows fertility to be preserved for the future. It can be important for both medical and personal reasons.
Egg Freezing
Recommended for women who:
- wish to delay motherhood for personal or professional reasons,
- are preparing for treatments that may affect fertility (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation),
- have conditions that impact ovarian function,
- want to preserve fertility before menopause or ovarian reserve decline.
Mature eggs are collected after ovarian stimulation and frozen using vitrification (rapid freezing).
Embryo Freezing
By law in Lithuania, all viable embryos remaining after transfer must be frozen and stored for at least 2 years. Patients may then choose to extend or discontinue storage.
Embryo freezing is useful for couples who:
- participate in IVF and have surplus good-quality embryos,
- wish to delay transfer for medical or personal reasons,
- want to preserve embryos for future family planning.
Stored embryos can be used in later cycles, improving treatment efficiency and reducing costs.
Sperm Freezing
Recommended when:
- starting treatments that may damage sperm production (e.g., cancer therapy),
- planning to preserve fertility for the future,
- the man cannot be present during the fertility procedure,
- sperm quality is limited or declining.
Storage Conditions
All material is frozen in liquid nitrogen at –196 °C. According to Lithuanian regulations:
- Eggs and sperm can be stored for up to 10 years.
- Embryos must be stored for at least 2 years, with the option to extend.
